Mechanisms of epilepsy in cortical dysplasia models

Focal cortical dysplasias (FCDs) represent common cortical malformations that are frequently associated with epilepsies and cognitive deficits. FCDs with dyslamination of the cortex and dysmorphic neurons as major neuropathological hallmarks are frequently associated with devastating and therapy-refractory epilepsies. Together with our collaborators Albert Becker and Susanne Schoch, we are studying the mechanisms underlying hyperexcitability in mouse models of FCDs. To this end, we are applying in-vitro electrophysiology with optogenetic circuit mapping, in-vivo imaging, in-vivo LFP measurements, and behavioural analyses.
